The short version

  • Train from Milano Centrale to Varenna-Esino, about an hour; times at trenitalia.com. Skip Como city on a first day; the middle of the lake is the show.
  • The triangle: Varenna, Bellagio, Menaggio, linked by mid-lake ferries. Two villages done well beat three done breathless.
  • In Varenna: the lakeside passerella walk and Villa Monastero’s gardens.
  • In Bellagio: the stair lanes, the point between the lake’s two arms, and Villa Melzi’s gardens along the water.
  • Foot-passenger ferries are cheap, and a mid-lake day pass pays for itself by the third hop. Timetables at navigazionelaghi.it.
  • On a weekday you get the same views with half the crowd.

Getting there

Regional trains leave Milano Centrale for Varenna-Esino about hourly and take one hour. Buy both directions and note your return options — evening trains back to Milan are regular but not endless. In Varenna, the ferry dock is a ten-minute lakeside walk from the station, and the timetable board there sets the shape of everything that follows.

The day

Walk Varenna’s passerella and Villa Monastero’s gardens first, then ferry to Bellagio for lunch and the stair lanes. Villa Melzi’s lakeside gardens fill the early afternoon. If the timetable is kind, hop to Menaggio for an hour of quieter waterfront, then ferry back to Varenna for the train. The slow battello is the ride with the views; the fast services save minutes you did not need on hops this short.

When to go

April to June and September are the lake at its best: gardens open, ferries frequent, crowds survivable. July and August are beautiful and dense — the weekday rule above becomes policy. From November to February the ferries thin, most villa gardens close, and the triangle stops working as a day; the lake in winter is a different, quieter trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

Varenna or Como city?
Varenna. Como city is a fine town at the wrong end of the lake for a day this short. If you go anyway, the Brunate funicular is its best hour.

Which villa gardens should I pick?
Villa Monastero in Varenna and Villa Melzi in Bellagio are both lakeside strolls; either satisfies. Villa Carlotta adds art and needs a stop on the Tremezzo shore.

Slow ferry or hydrofoil?
The slow battello is the view. On the short mid-lake hops the time difference barely matters.

Is one day enough?
For the triangle, yes. The lake is worth an overnight, but the day version is complete, not a compromise.

Can I swim?
Lidos and small beaches exist at all three villages in summer; the water stays cold into June.
